Doula is an ancient Greek term whose definition has come to mean a woman who helps other women. The word has further evolved to mean a women experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after childbirth.
Before hospital births became standard practice, women were often supported by birth companions, such as doulas, during childbirth. Although the use of doulas greatly diminished as births moved from home to hospital, there has been a recent resurgence of the use of doulas. Recent medical studies showing the many benefits associated with having a doula present during labor is one of the reasons for the resurgence.
